Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from various areas of the body. It is more commonly performed in areas like the abs, thighs and hips. But did you know that doctors can also perform liposuction on the cheeks?
Facial liposuction removes fat from your face in a bid to achieve a slimmer look or a more defined jawline. In particular, cheek liposuction focuses on the cheeks and is performed similar to how the procedure is done on other body parts.
Cheek liposuction is different from other procedures such as Sonobello Lift and buccal lipectomy, which is the removal of a specific fat tissue known as buccal fat pad, which is present in the cheek.
This outpatient procedure takes about 30-60 minutes, and your doctor will mark the area of the cheek using a pen before you will be administered with a general or local anesthesia.
Your doctor will then make small incisions on the target area and then apply any of the following techniques:
- Tumescent. You will be injected with a saline solution, epinephrine and pain medication so the area will stiffen and swell, making it possible for the doctor to remove fat.
- Ultrasound. The doctor will insert a tiny metal rod which creates ultrasonic energy to break up fat cells.
- Laser. Laser fiber is inserted and this releases energy to break down the fat.
Once one of these techniques has been performed, the doctor will then insert a cannula into the incision to suction the fat.
After the procedure is done, soreness and swelling will be felt in your face and your doctor will prescribe OTC meds to counter these.
You may also be advised to wear compression garment which you place over your head and cover your neck and jaw.
Full recovery will take 3-4 weeks and then you will have leaner and defined cheeks.
Side Effects
Discomfort and swelling are normal during recovery and will go away in a few days. But as with any procedure, there are possible complications. Here are some risks of undergoing cheek liposuction:

- 2. Skin discoloration
- 3. Loose, uneven or bumpy skin
- 4. Allergic reaction to anesthesia
- 5. Nerve damage leading to numbness
- 6. Infection
- 7. Fluid buildup
- 8. Fat embolism

The average cost of liposuction is $3,500, and this amount may be higher or lower depending on which part of the body will require liposuction, what technique is used, which doctor you choose, and others. It’s not covered by insurance so you will have to pay for your procedure out of pocket.
